According to published accounts,
Quasha tried to obstruct
investigations into Nugan Hand's
illegal operations, advising Gen.
LeRoy Manor, Nugan Hand's representative
in the Philippines, to
flee the country to avoid official
investigators. Quasha and his
son, New York attorney Alan G.
Quasha, are among the principal
owners of Harken Energy Corp.,
a Texas-based oil company that took
over George W. Bush's failing oil
company, Spectrum 7, in 1986.
The younger Bush has served on
Harken's board of directors since
then. In January 1990, Harken received
exclusive exploration and
drilling rights to all of Bahrain's
off-shore territories, a deal
which Charles Strain, a Houston-based
energy analyst, told Forbes
magazine was "an incredible deal,
unbelievable for this small
company."though it's hard to say
what.
"(Harken Energy Corporation is)--
one of the most mysterious and eccentric outfits ever to drill for oil."
-- Richard Beyer, Time, 1991
George W. arrived in Midland in 1977, set up a shell company, lost a congressional election in 1978, restarted building the company he'd put on hold, lost more than $2 million of other people's money, and left Midland with $840,000 in his pocket. Not bad for a guy who showed up with an Olds and $18K. Not good for the investors who lost $2 million -- unless they were speculating in political futures and cultivating connections with the son of the vice president of the United States. 6-01-1991:
Some of the most intersing information is, though, that "It is extremely
unusual for a company this small to have a concession of this magnitued"
Strain said. "It's just amazing." There has been media speculation that
Harken might have won the right to explore in Bahrain as a result of Bush
being the off-spring of President Bush. At least one newspaper article
implied that the Persian Gulf War might have been fought in part to ensure
that Harken could peacefully explore for oil in the Mideast.(of course)
Harken officials and others familiar with the company say neither George
W. Bush nor the Whitehouse had anything to do with (this obscure exploration
company) Harken winning these rights. George W. Bush (pres's son) owned
105,000 shares of the company and later sold them, I remember, without
notifing the SEC right before some really poor loss statements were released
to the public, (Inside trading) and could have been procecuted. (I guess
status does have it's benefits)
9-2-1993: Newsweek said that not only was George W. Bush probably going to run for gov. of Texas in '94, but Jeb Bush was looking into running for gov. of Florida in '94.
Wow, can you imagine? Sorta
like the Kennedys, only with morals.
5-19-1994: P.S. _U.S._News_ said this race would be _the_acid_test_ of whether a high- profile Democrat like Ann Richards can survice in an increasinglu Republican state like Texas. Both the TEXAS POLL and Mason-Dixon Poll say this is a horse race. I can win, if I have the resources to match Ann Richards on television, but I need your help today. Thanks.
9-26-1994:
``In order to change Texas and America, it's going to require new thinking,
new thought. We need a new culture,'' the younger Bush, 48, told Reuters
in an interview. ``There needs to be a sense of accountability
and responsibility in society if we expect our children and America to
have a chance,'' he said. ``I want to be one of the leaders leading our
country in that direction.''
It is a compelling political
theme for Republicans in this year of voter discontent, sharp anti-incumbent
hostility and a widespread feeling the country has taken a wrong moral
track.
8-5-1995:
''Lay understands
how government works. He knows who cuts the deals and he makes sure that
he knows people in the right places,'' says a Houston journalist who asked
not to be named.
Lay, whose posh River Oaks home in Houston is a few kms from the Tanglewood residence of George Bush, is a close friend of the former president. Although Bush himself has never been accused of doing favours for Lay, three of his sons have allegedly used their father's name to try and win contracts for Enron.
Neil and Marvin Bush were named in an article in the New Yorker magazine by investigative journalist Seymour Hersh as having tried to influence Kuwaiti officials in favour of an Enron bid to rebuild Shuaiba North, a power plant destroyed in the Persian Gulf war. Enron abandoned the bid a year ago.
In 1988, George W. Bush, another of the Bush sons who is now governor of Texas, reportedly telephoned Rodolfo Terragno, Argentina's Public Works Minister, to ask him to award Enron a contract to build a pipeline from Chile to Argentina.
''He assumed that the fact he was the son of the president would exert influence. I felt pressured. It was not proper for him to make that kind of call,'' Terragno recently told The Nation weekly magazine. Enron ultimately won the bid under the next government, headed up by Carlos Menem, another Bush friend.
In 1987, Neil Bush, a director of the failed Silverado Banking, Savings and Loan Association, which made millions of dollars in high-risk loan, created a subsidiary of his oil company to conduct business in Argentina. The activities of the two Bush children in Argentina prompted a parliamentary inquiry in that country.
''None of Bush's sons
have worked for Enron. I don't know why people keep bringing up these old
stories,'' says Bazelides.
Two weeks ago,
the head of Enron Development Corporation denied at in a press conference
in Bombay an IPS report that Enron used political clout to swing deals.
''Enron's reputation is being attacked, and we do not do business under
the table,'' said Rebecca Mark.
But Enron officials acknowledge that the company used James Baker, Bush's Secretary of State, and Robert Mosbacher, his Commerce Secretary as consultants. Also on the Enron payroll is Thomas Kelly, director of operations for the Pentagon during the Gulf War.
Another powerful Enron contact is Wendy Gramm, who joined Enron's board of directors in 1993 after resigning as chair of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) here. Previously, she was a senior staffer in the White House for former President Ronald Reagan.

: Thanks for the info. I don't know where CNN found these people,
but
: George W. Bush's approval ratings
from *all* Texans consistently range
: between 70 and 80 per cent.
Needless to say, his approval rating
: among GOP Texans is higher
still. I wouldn't worry about him if I
: were you.
I agree that Gov. Bush has few problems
with Texans, with the exception of
these few souls that seem to be
driving themselves farther and farther
from the mainstream. I'm
more worried about them...
5/28/1996: Get set for another George Bush presidency? Reports came in over the weekend that top GOP brass are looking at Texas Governor George W. Bush to lead in 2000. He is considered a moderate's dream, he cuts across party lines and there's not much baggage.
10/1/1996: Bill Clinton's preference for drift over direction may explain the dearth of bright young leaders in the party. Where is the Democrats' version of George W. Bush? Or of Christine Todd Whitman?
11/6/1996: HA HA HA HA
Now Sick willie will pardon Hubbel and McDougal and re-sign just prior to getting impeached. I hope his last shot on TV is like Nixon's was, holding up to peace signs and saying "I AM NOT A CROOK"...
And hopefully the demo's will nominate Al"stupid as a stump"Gore in 2000.
George W. BUSH will sweep the country using Gore's ass for a broom.
11/16/96: Jeb Bush is pretty much the same as his brother--an articulate moderate conservative. However, I don't feel that Bush is sufficiant as far as expanding the base.
9/18/1998: Ashcroft.... You will all learn what he is really about soon enough. I have worked for his administration and he is not what he seems.
