About Some Things

Jeff Sharman

Jeff was once mentioned in a correction in The New York Times. He lives in Seattle where he works as a bookseller.

Beans for Breakfast

Beans for Breakfast is my multi-purpose weblog/photoblog/journal/thing. It's been online since November 2000 - for the first year under titles like "Struat Media Empire" and "Here, Now". Beans for Breakfast was originally the title of a novel writing attempt, and was the only salvageable part of that effort. It turns out that the phrase turns up elsewhere, in a Johnny Cash song and a Desmond Dekker song.

Movable Type

I tried other weblogging tools before installing Movable Type. Movable Type was more flexible and more reliable than the others. I'd recommend it to all my friends. My endorsement is shaken by licensing restrictions introduced with Movable Type version 3.0.

Plugins

I use several Movable Type plugins to extend Movable Type's functionality: SimpleComments, Supplemental Category Tags, MTWordCount, Amputator, Plural, and MTIfEmpty.

PHP

When I can't find a Movable Type plugin to handle something, I usually hack something together in PHP.

Comments

The comment form is left open for most entries. I occassionally configure the comment form to require email addresses as part of my guard against comment spam. But commenter's email addresses don't appear on the site. If you specifically want your email address to appear with your comment, include it somewhere in the comment body. Spam comments are deleted. Abusive comments are deleted unless I think they're funny.

If you post a comment and set the "Remember Name, etc.?" option to "Yes", your browser will create a cookie containing the Name/Email/URL information that you've entered, and on future visits those fields will be filled in automatically.

Trackback

Trackback is a system that allows a remote site to register its links with the linked site. There's a better explanation over here. On Beans for Breakfast, an entry's Trackbacks are shuffled in with its comments. The Trackback URL appears near the bottom of every entry's page. Trackback has been deactivated for now, though old Trackbacks should still be visible.

Blogroll

Most of the weblogs that I read regularly are listed on my public Bloglines or blogrolling.com pages.

Creative Commons

The photos and writing on Beans for Breakfast are available for non-commercial use under the terms of this Creative Commons license. The license applies to Beans for Breakfast, and not necessarily to the other Struat.com sites.

Struat.com

Struat.com hosts a number of other vanity web projects by my brother Justin and myself.

Justin coined the term "struat" years ago, and it's become sort of a brand name. The original use of the word is forgotten.

I admit that http://www.struat.com/here/ is an unintuitive url for a site called Beans for Breakfast. In case you forget that one, beansforbreakfast.com also directs your browser here.

All Hands on Deck

The ferry boat captains (Struat.com) will always bring you back to the Struat.com site directory.
