Mr. Lincoln, we thought, had the better of the argument, and we all came away encouraged also.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The pro-Douglas Chicago Times also had its say.  In headline style, it told its readers:<\/p>\n<p>THE CAMPAIGN<br \/>\nDouglas Among the People!<br \/>\nLincoln Breaks down.<br \/>\nEnthusiasms  of the People!<br \/>\nLincoln&#8217;s Heart Fails Him!<br \/>\nLincoln&#8217;s Legs Fail Him!<br \/>\nLincoln&#8217;s Tongue Fails Him!<br \/>\nLincoln Fails All Over!<br \/>\nThe People Refuse to Support Him!<br \/>\nThe People Laugh at Him!<br \/>\nDouglas the Champion of the People!<\/p>\n<p>That was how it was in Chicago on August 22, 1958, the day after the first debate.<\/p>\n<p>At one point during the debates, Douglas told a crowd that Lincoln had been a storekeeper who sold whisky at one time.
