{"id":9035,"date":"2011-09-24T17:17:59","date_gmt":"2011-09-25T00:17:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/?p=9035"},"modified":"2011-09-24T17:17:59","modified_gmt":"2011-09-25T00:17:59","slug":"the-two-presidential-election-stories-that-will-resurface-again-and-again-with-no-real-meaning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/2011\/09\/24\/the-two-presidential-election-stories-that-will-resurface-again-and-again-with-no-real-meaning\/","title":{"rendered":"the two presidential election stories that will resurface again and again, with no real meaning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two stories about the Presidential contest come up once so often &#8212; whenever its principal actor puts out a press release, or whenever a columnist decides to point to it.<\/p>\n<p>Ralph Nader is searching for a Democratic Primary candidate to run against Obama.\u00c2\u00a0 The last time I checked out of the story, Mike Gravel had announced that your contributions would throw his hat into the ring &#8212; this didn&#8217;t seem to go anywhere.\u00c2\u00a0 Now Ralph Nader has upped the stakes and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/headline\/2011\/09\/19-7\">grabbed a bunch of signatories to his projec<\/a>t &#8212; progressive groups, a few former Democratic Senators from the 1970s, Corner West who has been engaging in an interesting debate that&#8217;s been sensationalized, the former editor of Harpers, and&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Ross Perot&#8217;s 1996 Vice Presidential Candidate!\u00c2\u00a0 Yes, I spot that man on the list.\u00c2\u00a0 Interesting.\u00c2\u00a0 Last I saw Pat Choate was 2000 and he was on Nightline defending Pat Buchanan, debating John Hagelin.\u00c2\u00a0 He apparently helped Buchanan into the Reform Party.\u00c2\u00a0 Looking him up on wikipedia, I do not know that Pat Choate is anything except against NAFTA &#8212; but, whatever.<\/p>\n<p>Well, I suppose that last one makes sense in the way that Ralph Nader made some positive noise about the positive influence on the body politik of one Sarah Palin.\u00c2\u00a0 Just&#8230; to annoy everyone, I suppose.<\/p>\n<p>The other big news is this Centrist Third Party contraption.\u00c2\u00a0 It received another crack from that David Broder &#8212; Thomas Friedman axis.\u00c2\u00a0 Their analysis doesn&#8217;t take into account the grappling of politicos to this &#8220;Non Partisan&#8221; edict.\u00c2\u00a0 They&#8217;re moving ahead &#8212; ballot by ballot&#8230; thinking that a Democratic Party president with high negatives and a Republican opponent with high negatives can give them some sliver &#8220;Center&#8221; wave &#8212; something a Charlie Crist once aimed at.<\/p>\n<p>Hm.\u00c2\u00a0 Ross Perot.\u00c2\u00a0 Rummaging under that engine, was his metaphor.\u00c2\u00a0 Cranking up the mechanics.\u00c2\u00a0 Fire away.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two stories about the Presidential contest come up once so often &#8212; whenever its principal actor puts out a press release, or whenever a columnist decides to point to it.
