{"id":8945,"date":"2011-09-08T10:39:14","date_gmt":"2011-09-08T17:39:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/?p=8945"},"modified":"2011-09-08T10:44:16","modified_gmt":"2011-09-08T17:44:16","slug":"ron-paul-and-rick-perry-battle-for-the-reagan-mantle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/2011\/09\/08\/ron-paul-and-rick-perry-battle-for-the-reagan-mantle\/","title":{"rendered":"Ron Paul and Rick Perry battle for The Reagan Mantle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-8958 alignleft\" title=\"rickperryronpaul\" src=\"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/rickperryronpaul-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Yes what was exchanged should get out there. \u00c2\u00a0But this a tad hyperventilating on the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.prisonplanet.com\/pictures-suggest-perry-attempted-to-physically-intimidate-ron-paul.html\">Conspiratorialists Love Ron Paul&#8221; corner<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ron Paul issued an ad against Rick Perry, focusing on the horrors of his past &#8212; back when Rick Perry was a Democrat, he was head of the Texas campaign for Al Gore&#8217;s Presidential bid of 1988. \u00c2\u00a0I suppose Rick Perry&#8217;s response of tit-for-tat might be effective, if Ron Paul were somehow legitimately a possible nominee for the Republican nomination. \u00c2\u00a0He found the letter Ron Paul <a href=\"http:\/\/slog.thestranger.com\/slog\/archives\/2011\/09\/06\/ron-paul-vs-rick-perry-round-2\">wrote walking out of the Republican Party<\/a> &#8212; and into the Libertarian Party candidate for President.<\/p>\n<p><em>I want to\u00c2\u00a0totally disassociate myself\u00c2\u00a0from the policies that have given us unprecedented deficits, massive monetary inflation, indiscriminate military spending, an irrational and unconstitutional foreign policy, zooming foreign aid, the exaltation of international banking, and the attack on our personal liberties and privacy.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ron Paul&#8217;s one problem was, in attacking Perry, wrapping himself in the banner of Ronald Reagan. \u00c2\u00a0Which doesn&#8217;t quite make sense, even absent this letter Paul has consistently charged Reagan as a failure to his cause of limited government &#8212; had the heart in the right place at times, but came up empty, etc.<\/p>\n<p>But it did bring about the interesting side-show at the Republican debate&#8230; sideshow, I say, because mostly the media coverage was out to focus on Romeny versus Perry (more than 90 percent chance the Republican nominee will be one or the other.)<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"The attacks kept up even during the commercial breaks \u00e2\u20ac\u201d and not just on stage. Mr. Paul had paid to run an ad during the MSNBC broadcast attacking Mr. Perry, pointing to his support for Al Gore\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s presidential bid in the 1980s, including twice calling the governor a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153cheerleader.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d  \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Al Gore found a cheerleader in Texas named Rick Perry,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d the ad announcer intones.\">The attacks kept up even during the commercial breaks<\/a> \u00e2\u20ac\u201d and not just on stage.\u00c2\u00a0Mr. Paul\u00c2\u00a0had paid to run an ad during the MSNBC broadcast attacking\u00c2\u00a0Mr. Perry, pointing to his support for Al Gore\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s presidential bid in the 1980s, including twice calling the governor a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153cheerleader.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Al Gore found a cheerleader in Texas named\u00c2\u00a0Rick Perry,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d the ad announcer intones.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Perry tries to nit and pick what his 1988 campaigning meant. \u00c2\u00a0He comes up short, somewhat. \u00c2\u00a0The one thing he tags to was disowned by Gore&#8217;s political re-positioning.<\/p>\n<p>Perry tried to play up Gore\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s more conservative side when asked last week about the endorsement in\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=eUc7JpPqEFc\" target=\"_blank\">an interview with Fox News\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Sean Hannity<\/a>.<br \/>\n<em>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Al Gore appeared to be the most conservative \u00e2\u20ac\u201d a strong Strategic Defense Initiative guy \u00e2\u20ac\u201d and frankly, we thought that he would be the most conservative Democrat,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Perry said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153You know, we were wrong.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/em><br \/>\n<em>In fact, Perry has repeatedly pointed to Gore\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s support for the Strategic Defense Initiative, which is also known as Star Wars. But as ABC\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Michael Falcone points out, before his presidential campaign, Gore had<a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/blogs\/politics\/2011\/08\/rick-perrys-defense-of-1988-al-gore-endorsement-runs-into-reality\/\" target=\"_blank\">actually disowned<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0his support of the program.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><\/em>Gore deserves an odd look-see itself:<\/p>\n<p><em>As this example shows, mining Gore\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s record for more conservative positions is relatively difficult because Gore wasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t terribly conservative back then. Sure, Gore was more moderate than he is today, but he was still someone with a foot in both the more elite East Coast Democratic establishment as well as in more rural Southern Democratic circles.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>The Almanac of American Politics \u00e2\u20ac\u201d a.k.a. the Fix\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Bible \u00e2\u20ac\u201d in 1990 described Gore as a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153generally liberal\u00e2\u20ac\u009d senator who was \u00e2\u20ac\u0153closer to traditional Demcoratic big government views than other Democrats, notably Michael Dukakis\u00e2\u20ac\u009d while more hawkish than his party on foreign policy issues.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Har de har har. \u00c2\u00a0Actually this presents a problem of political definitions &#8212; see John Edwards in the way a Southern post civil rights era Democratic politician someone was somehow simultaneously &#8220;right&#8221; and &#8220;left&#8221; of the national political party.<\/p>\n<p>The other sideshow battle &#8212; Jon Huntsman versus everyone, and take it away with regard to Rick Perry and&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonmonthly.com\/political-animal\/2011_09\/galileo_got_outvoted_for_a_spe032063.php\">Gallileo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Perry&#8217;s a Rove Scientist on Climate Change, persecuted by the Inquisition, and &#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yes what was exchanged should get out there. \u00c2\u00a0But this a tad hyperventilating on the &#8220;Conspiratorialists Love Ron Paul&#8221; corner.
