That ceiling, now set at $14.3 trillion, was shattered May 16, and Congress has until Aug. 2 to find a way to avoid default. \u00ef\u00bb\u00bf<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

May 16 was the first deadline; August 2 is the second deadline.\u00c2\u00a0 The first was passed over, after the whole brass in the Treasury warned not “to play games with this”.\u00c2\u00a0 After August, the Economy will go into a tail-spin.\u00c2\u00a0 So the prediction goes.<\/p>\n

Of course, the danger always lays in the precedent of becoming lax to the deadline.\u00c2\u00a0 That was probably the case once upon a time with semi-arbitrary figures of debt numbers and deficit numbers.\u00c2\u00a0 Pass a trillion — one can just go on ahead.<\/p>\n

Boehner has said repeatedly that any increase in the debt limit should come with trillions of dollars in spending cuts and other budget changes, all aimed at erasing a sea of red ink. Boehner has consistently said that everything except tax increases is on the table to reduce the nation’s debt.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

Once upon\u00c2\u00a0 a time a George H W Bush raised top marginal taxes.\u00c2\u00a0 Then Bill Clinton did.\u00c2\u00a0 That and some spending cuts and a robust economy produced a balanced budget.\u00c2\u00a0 Then this happened:<\/p>\n

Various organizations have come in to put big money in stopping any hint of a tax cut.\u00c2\u00a0 It is large enough that Obama came face to face with the idea that the Bush Administration tax cut expiration was unfeasible against the newly elected Republican Congress — a new precedent has been drawn on proceeding ahead on how to solve the problem.<\/p>\n

For “Clean Debt Limit” purposes the Republican House gives this bill<\/a>:<\/p>\n

4 The Congress finds that the President\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s budget pro5<\/em>
\nposal, Budget of the United States Government, Fiscal<\/em>
\n6 Year 2012, necessitates an increase in the statutory debt<\/em>
\n7 limit of $2,406,000,000,000.<\/em><\/p>\n

‘Tis a partisan game.\u00c2\u00a0 Generally measures meant to be passed refrain from partisan gamesmanship in favor of straight forward language.\u00c2\u00a0 And we’re back to the Treasury’s warning about “Playing Games.”\u00c2\u00a0 Not that it matters all that much:\u00c2\u00a0 something will get passed.\u00c2\u00a0 It’s just that unlike last time, a milestone in “playing games with the debt limit” was passed — up against the second deadline instead of the first — and is a new barometer.\u00c2\u00a0 (Whether it was necessary in order to curb the other guidelines I guess you can leave up to the Tea Party meanderings.)
