{"id":7562,"date":"2011-02-09T20:58:21","date_gmt":"2011-02-10T03:58:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/?p=7562"},"modified":"2011-02-09T14:32:10","modified_gmt":"2011-02-09T21:32:10","slug":"michelle-bachman-versus-ron-paul","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/2011\/02\/09\/michelle-bachman-versus-ron-paul\/","title":{"rendered":"Michelle Bachman versus Ron Paul"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.disinfo.com\/2011\/02\/democrats-vote-against-patriot-act-extentions-then-bash-republicans-over-its-defeat\/\">Item<\/a>:\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>Top House Democrats pounced on Republicans\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 mishandling of a routine vote Tuesday evening, which caused a bill to extend provisions of the Patriot Act go down in defeat.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The Democrats said Wednesday morning that the failed vote is a sign that Republican leaders aren\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t prepared to handle the practical difficulties of governing.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t think they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve found their center yet,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Democratic Caucus conference chair Rep. John Larson (D-Conn.) said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153It seems they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re coming apart at the seams.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>AND Item:<\/p>\n<p><em>Only 26 Republicans voted against the bill, and there are 52 <\/em><em>members<\/em><em> of the Republican Tea Party Caucus, whose chairperson, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn)\u00c2\u00a0 voted for reauthorization along with <\/em><em>most of the rest of her caucus<\/em><em>. As Slate\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Dave Weigel\u00c2\u00a0 <\/em><em>points<\/em><em> out, only eight of the 26 were Republican freshmen elected last November. One hundred and twenty-two Democrats voted against reauthorization, I suspect most of them just because they could.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>So how did the bill fail? Basically Republicans were trying to pass the bill under \u00e2\u20ac\u0153suspension of the rules,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d which is considered the process for passing \u00e2\u20ac\u0153noncontroversial\u00e2\u20ac\u009d legislation.\u00c2\u00a0 You need a two thirds majority of those present to pass bills that way. For one brief night, Republicans in the House learned what it was like to be a Democrat in the Senate.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Leave all this aside.\u00c2\u00a0 The really interesting storyline here concerns the battle between two supposed Presidential candidates, both representative of strains of something called the &#8220;Tea Party&#8221;.\u00c2\u00a0 Do you side with Ron Paul and his small grouping allying with Dennis Kucinich and his small grouping backed by more cynical Democrats &#8212;<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/news\/ron_paul\/?story=\/politics\/war_room\/2011\/02\/08\/ron_paul_2012\">Ron Paul is running for President<\/a>, and driving for support <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/blogs\/bensmith\/0211\/At_CPAC_the_race_for_second_place_as_Paul_goes_all_out.html\">to win the CPAC preference poll<\/a>, sure\u00c2\u00a0to lead to moanings from everyone else at the conference who&#8217;d rather vote for someone solid like&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Michelle Bachman &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2011\/02\/09\/AR2011020903701.html\">supposedly running <\/a>&#8211;,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/storyonly\/2011\/2\/9\/942282\/-House-GOP-in-disarray.-But-is-the-Tea-Party-Caucus-really-behind-it\"> leading the fight to bring extend the Patriot Act<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0(which will inevitably happen, as the Security State is a bipartisan affair, with only an alliance of Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich fighting against it).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.csmonitor.com\/USA\/Politics\/2011\/0209\/A-tea-party-message-in-Patriot-Act-defeat-We-re-about-more-than-taxes\">Depends on which strain<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><em>The failure of the two-thirds vote \u00e2\u20ac\u201c with 26 Republicans joining 122 Democrats to vote against it \u00e2\u20ac\u201c <\/em><em>fractured GOP unity<\/em><em> on a key national-security issue and put a faction of the conservative House in line with liberals like Rep.
