{"id":7493,"date":"2011-01-28T13:43:36","date_gmt":"2011-01-28T20:43:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/?p=7493"},"modified":"2011-01-28T13:43:36","modified_gmt":"2011-01-28T20:43:36","slug":"sarah-palin-travels-rhetorically-to-richland-washington","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/2011\/01\/28\/sarah-palin-travels-rhetorically-to-richland-washington\/","title":{"rendered":"Sarah Palin travels rhetorically to Richland, Washington"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Obama&#8217;s State of the Union speech is most remembered by those who watched it (about half of the total of people who claimed they would be watching it) for a salmon joke.\u00c2\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2011\/01\/28\/133211131\/the-state-of-the-union-in-your-words\">You can see that here<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 The speech will be remembered for further developments in the use of the Internet &#8212; as graphs and charts accompanied the speech at whitehouse.gov &#8212; including a graph made to look like a salmon.\u00c2\u00a0 Surely it contained a lot more items than salmon &#8212; Obama wants everyone to remember the phrase &#8220;Winning the Future&#8221;.\u00c2\u00a0 It is his &#8220;Building a Bridge to the 21st Century&#8221;.\u00c2\u00a0 Then there is his call about a &#8220;Sputnik moment&#8221;, a moment in the Eisenhower Administration when the Soviets launched a satellite and made the US fear that we were falling behind.\u00c2\u00a0 Interestingly enough, Eisenhower&#8217;s &#8220;Military Industrial Complex&#8221; speech was built around the unreal logic of the developments of mis-spending lots of money chasing these demons.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0I imagine a world where\u00c2\u00a0Sarah Palin (or someone in her position of giving her response to Obama&#8217;s speech) might reference these problems in arguring on the implications of &#8220;Sputnik Moments&#8221; as against a politics of a more prudent or &#8220;limited government&#8221; mining the tax-rolls and the budget.\u00c2\u00a0 But she didn&#8217;t go there.\u00c2\u00a0 Instead, she travelled to Richland, Washington, by way of identifying &#8220;Winning the Future&#8221; with its acronym.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;What we need is a Spudnut moment and here&#8217;s where I&#8217;m going with this Greta . . . The Spudnut shop in Richland Washington&#8211;it&#8217;s a bakery, it&#8217;s a little coffee shop that&#8217;s so successful, 60 some years, generation-to-generation of family owned business that&#8217;s not looking for government to bail &#8217;em out and make their decisions for them, it&#8217;s just hardworking, patriotic Americans in this shop.
