{"id":5911,"date":"2010-04-20T07:45:41","date_gmt":"2010-04-20T14:45:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/?p=5911"},"modified":"2010-04-20T07:49:46","modified_gmt":"2010-04-20T14:49:46","slug":"bad-confluence-of-days-in-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/2010\/04\/20\/bad-confluence-of-days-in-history\/","title":{"rendered":"Bad Confluence of Days in History"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s sort of a bad confluence of events for History on April 19 and April 20.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/April_19\">For April 19<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"1993\" href=\"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/wiki\/1993\">1993<\/a> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c The <a title=\"Waco Siege\" href=\"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/wiki\/Waco_Siege\">51-day siege<\/a> of the <a title=\"Branch Davidian\" href=\"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/wiki\/Branch_Davidian\">Branch Davidian<\/a> building outside <a title=\"Waco, Texas\" href=\"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/wiki\/Waco,_Texas\">Waco, Texas<\/a>, <a title=\"United States\" href=\"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/wiki\/United_States\">USA<\/a>, ends when a fire breaks out. Eighty-one people die.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"1995\" href=\"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/wiki\/1995\">1995<\/a> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c <a title=\"Oklahoma City bombing\" href=\"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/wiki\/Oklahoma_City_bombing\">Oklahoma City bombing<\/a>: The <a title=\"Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building\" href=\"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/wiki\/Alfred_P._Murrah_Federal_Building\">Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building<\/a> in Oklahoma City, <a title=\"Oklahoma\" href=\"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/wiki\/Oklahoma\">Oklahoma<\/a>, <a title=\"United States\" href=\"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/wiki\/United_States\">USA<\/a>, is bombed, killing 168. That same day convicted murderer Richard Wayne Snell, who had ties to bombing suspect <a title=\"Timothy McVeigh\" href=\"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/wiki\/Timothy_McVeigh\">Timothy McVeigh<\/a>, is executed in <a title=\"Arkansas\" href=\"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/wiki\/Arkansas\">Arkansas<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So it is, the New York Times published this essay yesterday:\u00c2\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com\/2010\/04\/19\/can-you-have-a-happy-birthday-on-april-19\/?pagemode=print&amp;scp=2&amp;sq=McVeigh&amp;st=cse\">Can You Have a Happy Birthday on April 19?<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>To be sure, other events of note occurred on April 19, some good, some  bad \u00e2\u20ac\u201d the beginning of the Revolutionary War in 1775, Lincoln\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s blockade  of Confederate ports in 1861, Captain Cook\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s sighting of Australia in  1770, the destruction of Toronto by fire in 1904, the abandonment of the  gold standard in 1933, the Warsaw Ghetto revolt in 1943, the marriage  of  Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier of Monaco in 1956, the sentencing of  Charles Manson in 1971, the installation as Pope  Benedict XVI of   Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger in 2005 (good or bad; hard to tell), the  Broadway opening of my favorite musical, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Carousel\u00e2\u20ac\u009d (1945), the   birthdays of Ashley Judd (1968), Murray Perahia (1947), Dudley Moore  (1935), Jayne Mansfield (1933), Eliot Ness (1903), and the deaths of  C.S. Pierce (1914), Charles Darwin (1882), Benjamin Disraeli (1881),  Lord Byron (1824) and Paolo Veronese (1588).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I think the &#8220;beginning of the Revolutionary War&#8221; figured into a connection for McVeigh.\u00c2\u00a0 Uber-Patriot Timothy McVeigh went out to avenge the Government&#8217;s killings at Waco by a terrorist act aimed at the government in Oklahoma City.<\/p>\n<p>And you know what else?<br \/>\n<em>For the government, April 19 is a day to worry about. When <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/03\/30\/us\/30militia.html?scp=1&amp;sq=hutaree%20nine%20arrests&amp;st=cse\">F.B.I.  agents arrested nine members of the Christian militia known as the  Hutaree in late March<\/a>, they acted because of information indicating  that the group was planning an attack on police officers sometime in  April. The betting is that the date they had in mind was April 19.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On edge.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/April_20\">April 20 brings us<\/a> &#8212;<\/p>\n<p>Birth:\u00c2\u00a0 1889 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c <a title=\"Adolf Hitler\" href=\"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/wiki\/Adolf_Hitler\">Adolf Hitler<\/a>, German Nazi dictator (d. 1945)<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"1999\" href=\"..\/..\/wiki\/1999\">1999<\/a> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c <a title=\"Columbine  High School massacre\" href=\"..\/..\/wiki\/Columbine_High_School_massacre\">Columbine  High School massacre<\/a>: <a title=\"Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold\" href=\"..\/..\/wiki\/Eric_Harris_and_Dylan_Klebold\">Eric  Harris and Dylan Klebold<\/a> kill 13 people and injure 24 others before  committing suicide at <a title=\"Columbine High School\" href=\"..\/..\/wiki\/Columbine_High_School\">Columbine  High School<\/a> in <a title=\"Jefferson County, Colorado\" href=\"..\/..\/wiki\/Jefferson_County,_Colorado\">Jefferson  County, Colorado<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Are these things related?\u00c2\u00a0 The answer is no, except in the early news reporting which I guess was based on some rather flaky unreliable student interviews and conjecture.\u00c2\u00a0 Perhaps too an internet posting that day from a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.roanoke.com\/news\/breaking\/wb\/243342\">screwy neo-naz<\/a>i citing the unleashing of &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/74.125.153.132\/search?q=cache:mvPMYusicHEJ:www.ronpaulforums.com\/archive\/index.php%3Ft-68234.html+%22police+are+quietly+and+privately+confirming+that+the+school+shooters+in+Littleton+Colorado+were+part+of+a+UAP+cell%22&amp;cd=1&amp;hl=en&amp;ct=clnk&amp;gl=us\">Sleeper cell&#8221; in Suburban Colorado<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 But this fell by the wayside in due time, I suppose.\u00c2\u00a0 But I guess that was only slightly less relevant to what happened than the Columbine High School clique group that had mostly graduated out in 1998, which the &#8220;Trenchcoat Mafia&#8221; has long become a short quick-hand reference.\u00c2\u00a0 Or to Marilyn Manson, for that matter.\u00c2\u00a0 These all sort out to become the equivalent of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1995\/04\/24\/us\/terror-oklahoma-arab-reaction-bitterness-over-early-finger-pointing-toward.html?pagewanted=1\">siting of an Arab near the premises<\/a> &#8212; something still today you get as evidence of a further conspiracy.<\/p>\n<p>Our popular awareness of the Oklahoma City bombing is pretty much accurate, and our popular awareness of Columbine is not particularly accurate.\u00c2\u00a0 The latter gets infused with conceptions of adolescence and high school, and a Moral Panic of &#8220;What is happening with our children?&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0 Meaning needs to be found.<br \/>\nWell, I think public and private schools are a bit on alert for today.\u00c2\u00a0 If it works to distract anyone, 4:20 and its attendant Stoner Isle of a Stoner Holiday is right around the corner.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s sort of a bad confluence of events for History on April 19 and April 20.
