{"id":4258,"date":"2009-07-05T15:00:52","date_gmt":"2009-07-05T22:00:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/?p=4258"},"modified":"2009-07-05T15:00:52","modified_gmt":"2009-07-05T22:00:52","slug":"palin-redux","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/2009\/07\/05\/palin-redux\/","title":{"rendered":"Palin redux"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The first thing I note in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.weeklystandard.com\/weblogs\/TWSFP\/2009\/07\/kristol_a_contrarian_take_1.asp\">The Weekly Standard insta &#8211; piece from William Kristol on Sarah Palin&#8217;s resignation<\/a>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; Hey!\u00c2\u00a0 Finally The Weekly Standard is looking to someone besides Reagan as a historical model to connect.\u00c2\u00a0 Margaret Thatcher!\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Which is good, because otherwise I&#8217;m stuck with Kristol&#8217;s clever &#8220;unconventional thinking&#8221;.\u00c2\u00a0 Sarah Palin is off and running for president.<\/p>\n<p><em>I suppose she&#8217;ll take a hit for leaving the governorship early &#8211; but how much of one? She&#8217;s probably accomplished most of what she was going to get done as governor.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I will now farm out to an Alaskan the question of what it is Palin has accomplished.<br \/>\nI will give Kristol this: We do live in a system which rewards electoral mediocrity.\u00c2\u00a0 A presidential candidate has to step aside any political controversy that may undo him\/her.\u00c2\u00a0 And avoid leaving a record to pick apart.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0It looks like the future lies with single-term Senators and governors who can step away before the effects of an economic down-turn force harsh decisions.<br \/>\nPalin\u00c2\u00a0may also be truncating the Nixon approach, I suppose.\u00c2\u00a0 Out of office, you shore up a &#8220;machine&#8221; and obstensibly campaign for the party in the mid-term.\u00c2\u00a0 It strikes me as a debased version of that, but then again the &#8220;Experience versus New face&#8221; campaign of Clinton versus Obama bama versus Clinton as a reprise of Johnson versus Kennedy seemed kind of shaky &#8212; Clinton&#8217;s tenure of Senatorial experience matching the &#8220;new face&#8221; Kennedy.<\/p>\n<p><em>All in all, it&#8217;s going to be a high-wire act. The odds are against her pulling it off.
