{"id":4093,"date":"2009-06-07T14:51:08","date_gmt":"2009-06-07T21:51:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/?p=4093"},"modified":"2009-06-07T14:51:08","modified_gmt":"2009-06-07T21:51:08","slug":"geography-is-everything","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/2009\/06\/07\/geography-is-everything\/","title":{"rendered":"Geography is everything"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It struck me today when looking over the &#8220;Sunday Morning gab-fests&#8221; of politicans hawking the party-talking points on the issues of the day for political talking-heads.<\/p>\n<p>Who do the Republicans have speaking for them?\u00c2\u00a0 Senator Richard Shelby.\u00c2\u00a0 Senator Jeff Sessions.\u00c2\u00a0 Both of Alabama.<\/p>\n<p>Jeff Sessions is notable, as the chair of the ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee.\u00c2\u00a0 Arlen Specter preceded him in that spot, until political expediency flipped him the Democrats.\u00c2\u00a0 Specter would have provided a softer-line for Sotomayor, and I suppose Sessions is getting the Republican base more representation on the score of going to battle.<\/p>\n<p>The political base is a bit tone-deaf to the political implications of such things as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.nationalreview.com\/nrd\/images\/covers\/20090622.gif\">National Review cover<\/a>, confusing in its ethnic collage work.\u00c2\u00a0 One hit against winning the Southwest.\u00c2\u00a0 One hit, perhaps, for winning his string of states below the Mason-Dixie line.<\/p>\n<p>Other notable Republican comments from this week &#8212; Lamar Smith of Texas is going to assemble some Congress-critters to battle Liberal Bias &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsmax.com\/kessler\/media_bias_House_caucus\/2009\/06\/03\/221014.html\">a greater threat than a Terrorist Attack or a Depression<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 Care to take a peak at the states from whence his &#8220;Fight the Liberal Bias&#8221; Caucus come?<\/p>\n<p>Obama, meanwhile, <a href=\"http:\/\/content.usatoday.com\/communities\/theoval\/post\/2009\/06\/67594599\/1\">is collecting a pile of Republicans in his administration<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/06\/07\/us\/politics\/web06hill.html?ref=us\">I suppose it taints the color of his administration<\/a> with a certain &#8220;Rockefeller Republican&#8221; streak &#8212; adding with these the Senator of Specter, but this is a counter-reverse to the Republicans collection of conservative Democrats from whence the ideological lines between the two parties were muddled\u00c2\u00a0a bit more.<\/p>\n<p>My observation is simply this: when I hear a news quip on the radio prefacing a voice with &#8220;Republican Congressman\/ Senator \/ (to a certain degree Governor)&#8221;, I expect what will follow is a Southern accent.\u00c2\u00a0 Hardly a novel statement, and it is being much bandied about, but it kind of fell down on me like an anvil today.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It struck me today when looking over the &#8220;Sunday Morning gab-fests&#8221; of politicans hawking the party-talking points on the issues of the day for political talking-heads.
