{"id":3329,"date":"2009-01-29T20:17:47","date_gmt":"2009-01-30T03:17:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/2009\/01\/29\/journals-of-note\/"},"modified":"2009-01-29T20:49:21","modified_gmt":"2009-01-30T03:49:21","slug":"journals-of-note","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/2009\/01\/29\/journals-of-note\/","title":{"rendered":"journals of note"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The other day, The Oregonian&#8217;s above the fold front page had the headline &#8220;Blood Everywhere&#8221;.\u00c2\u00a0 It was the big story, more details on the tragic random shooting spree by a lone gunman at the under-age downtown club.\u00c2\u00a0 (Sympathies to all involved).\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0The headline, I thinks, was inappropriate &#8212; I won&#8217;t say &#8220;Literally &#8216;If it Bleeds it Leads'&#8221;, because that would\u00c2\u00a0entail a novel type of printing, so I substitute the word &#8220;figuratively&#8221; for &#8220;literally&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>I wandered to the Oregonian online and its coverage on the story, and looked down in the comments.\u00c2\u00a0 This is not such a good idea &#8212; what you will see is people throwing shots at the Mayor.\u00c2\u00a0 But I guess it shows how hard-wired people are to the Sam Adams story to wedgie Sam Adams in that.<\/p>\n<p>Meantime,\u00c2\u00a0a Willamette Week box downtown has been emptied, with someone having written something like, I don&#8217;t know <em>Tabloid &#8220;Journalism&#8221;.<\/em>\u00c2\u00a0 The Beat marches on from there.<\/p>\n<p>For some slight explication on previous post, I do think Adams should go, but I don&#8217;t think so with enough force to pick up pitch forks.\u00c2\u00a0 And the one thing Adams must know comes from his status as &#8220;First Gay Mayor of a Major American City&#8221;, Portland being Media Market #25 (or is it, like 35?)&#8211; and there lies Adams&#8217;s problem:\u00c2\u00a0 I don&#8217;t have much doubt about most cities\u00c2\u00a0from Market #1 through 25 in\u00c2\u00a0being able to elect a Mayor who is gay, but he just screwed up the slowly moving\u00c2\u00a0out\u00c2\u00a0to the media markets that make\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/eliot\/wheel-of-fortunes-gay-champion-26q\">Wheel of Fortune\u00c2\u00a0<\/a>an enduring commodity.<\/p>\n<p>Actually that last point about Wheel of Fortune was a non-sequitur, forced to\u00c2\u00a0mention that odd\u00c2\u00a0shift in cultural norms.\u00c2\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know\u00c2\u00a0how Wheel of Fortune ratings\u00c2\u00a0break down by way of urban \/ suburban\/ rural.<\/p>\n<p>My point is here to compare to Obama, who I can find a news article saying Obama&#8217;s election has inspired various black elected officials to make that next bold step to a further higher office &#8212; Representative Artur Davis of Alabama, eyeing the Alabama Governorship, is the best example.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The other day, The Oregonian&#8217;s above the fold front page had the headline &#8220;Blood Everywhere&#8221;.\u00c2\u00a0 It was the big story, more details on the tragic random shooting spree by a lone gunman at the under-age downtown club.\u00c2\u00a0 (Sympathies to all involved).\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0The headline, I thinks, was inappropriate &#8212; I won&#8217;t say &#8220;Literally &#8216;If it Bleeds it [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-3329","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3329","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=3329"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3329\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=3329"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=3329"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=3329"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
