{"id":2814,"date":"2008-07-15T14:21:52","date_gmt":"2008-07-15T21:21:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/2008\/07\/15\/that-cover\/"},"modified":"2008-07-15T14:21:52","modified_gmt":"2008-07-15T21:21:52","slug":"that-cover","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/2008\/07\/15\/that-cover\/","title":{"rendered":"that cover"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It takes me a second to decide what I think about the New Yorker cover.\u00c2\u00a0 (You know the one.)\u00c2\u00a0 The problem is the problem with politics:\u00c2\u00a0 the more important question of something like this is not what I think but what I think this or that segment of the American electorate think.\u00c2\u00a0 In the case of thinking about this cover and its ramifications for the electorate, it amounts to basically <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theonion.com\/content\/video\/in_the_know_candidates_compete\">this<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The interesting thing is to hear liberals parse the cover&#8217;s satire quotient.\u00c2\u00a0 It would be proper satire if it showed the subject of the focus &#8212; the believer of this image, I see tell.\u00c2\u00a0 If they say so, but talk about running into that &#8220;Elitist&#8221; land.\u00c2\u00a0 Someone at the Huffington Post suggests that this ain&#8217;t satire, it&#8217;s burlesque.\u00c2\u00a0 Indeed.\u00c2\u00a0 And&#8230; half a dozen of this &#8212; six of the other.\u00c2\u00a0 BRILLIANT ANALYSIS&#8230; let us find precise definitions and fight over terminology, please.<\/p>\n<p>After watching the vice-presidential debate of 2004, I was asked who I thought won.\u00c2\u00a0 I started parsing out the meaning in terms of electoral debris, and then was stopped with the question &#8220;Who do\u00c2\u00a0YOU think won?&#8221;, which four years out occurs to me as a meaningless question.\u00c2\u00a0 Cheney won &#8212; he was an evil lier, but Edwards looked like an empty suit.\u00c2\u00a0 Does that matter much?\u00c2\u00a0 Hard to say.<\/p>\n<p>Rumble through the political implications of The New Yorker cover.\u00c2\u00a0 Better still rumble through the implications of its a Focal\u00c2\u00a0spot light in the 24 hour news cycle.\u00c2\u00a0 And then ask the meaningless question of what I think of it.\u00c2\u00a0 The answer to that question is, Hm&#8230; I kinda like it.<\/p>\n<p>The only thing I can say is that I spotted immediately with Obama&#8217;s presence in the fight that the election campaign was going to be full of these things &#8212; The New Yorker cover, some pundit referencing Oreo cookies, etc.\u00c2\u00a0 And here we are.\u00c2\u00a0 I give it all a bit of leeway.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It takes me a second to decide what I think about the New Yorker cover.\u00c2\u00a0 (You know the one.)\u00c2\u00a0 The problem is the problem with politics:\u00c2\u00a0 the more important question of something like this is not what I think but what I think this or that segment of the American electorate think.\u00c2\u00a0 In the case [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-2814","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2814","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=2814"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2814\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=2814"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=2814"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=2814"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
