{"id":2419,"date":"2007-07-08T10:55:31","date_gmt":"2007-07-08T17:55:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/2007\/07\/08\/revisiting-that-skull-and-bones-thing\/"},"modified":"2007-07-08T10:55:31","modified_gmt":"2007-07-08T17:55:31","slug":"revisiting-that-skull-and-bones-thing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/2007\/07\/08\/revisiting-that-skull-and-bones-thing\/","title":{"rendered":"revisiting that Skull and Bones thing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Somewhere or other, the matter of John Kerry&#8217;s Skull and Bones involvement came up.\u00c2\u00a0 Specifically, the annoying clinging to the rule of Skull and Bones that thou shall never say a word about it &#8212; Bush and Kerry both belonged to a secret society that they refused to talk about.<\/p>\n<p>So Kerry sat there on Meet the Press, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/2004\/02\/02\/meet-the-press-covers-skull-and-bones\/\">and did this<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That tight-lipped &#8220;Can&#8217;t talk about it&#8221;, followed by a moment of awkward silence as it went on, and then the awkward shift of topic with &#8220;I&#8217;ll tell you what&#8217;s not a secret&#8221; to the cursory jab at Bush.<br \/>\nIt was a disorienting moment, and at a certain moment I wonder if a margin of Kerry&#8217;s defeat could not have been made up if he hadn&#8217;t done this.\u00c2\u00a0 The appropriate answer is pretty easy to conjure up, to the effect of: &#8220;It was a good experience in college, met lots of friends, had a lot of good times, good memories.\u00c2\u00a0 And, yes, a few of the traditions\u00c2\u00a0 were sort of silly.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>BANG!\u00c2\u00a0 A percentage point and a half the queasy feeling one gets in staring at two candidates who seem to be in a perpetual inside-joke that they refuse to let go, and continue on with when in Powerful Places.\u00c2\u00a0 (Bush pulled the same thing on Meet the Press.)\u00c2\u00a0 KERRY WINS!<br \/>\nBut then again, perhaps the all powerful Skull and Bones hierarchy would have destroyed him right then and there.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Somewhere or other, the matter of John Kerry&#8217;s Skull and Bones involvement came up.\u00c2\u00a0 Specifically, the annoying clinging to the rule of Skull and Bones that thou shall never say a word about it &#8212; Bush and Kerry both belonged to a secret society that they refused to talk about.
