{"id":2412,"date":"2007-07-05T09:25:51","date_gmt":"2007-07-05T16:25:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/2007\/07\/05\/in-the-funnies\/"},"modified":"2007-07-05T09:25:51","modified_gmt":"2007-07-05T16:25:51","slug":"in-the-funnies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/2007\/07\/05\/in-the-funnies\/","title":{"rendered":"in the funnies&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/justin\/crankenshiftcomicstrip.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Taken from &#8220;Josh Reads&#8221;, <a href=\"http:\/\/joshreads.com\/?p=1143\">who adds the essential commentary:<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Actually, from everything I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve heard, the replacement of a brutal but essentially secular dictatorship with an elected coalition of religious-based political parties has resulted in Western dress becoming <\/em><em>less common, not more, in Iraq.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But I scratch my head and wonder &#8220;What world is the cartoonist behind Crankshaft living in&#8221;?\u00c2\u00a0 I suppose somewhere on the same neighborhood as The Family Circus.<\/p>\n<p>Somewhere in the mind of this cartoonist is a view of the world&#8217;s path to freedom along the lines of The Soviet Union&#8217;s collapse and market forces bringing Blue Jeans, Pepsi Cola, and The Beatles into a thirsting public tired of taking whatever the Central Government handed out.<\/p>\n<p>Our popular imagination of freedom in Afghanistan sort of trickles back and forth <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cursor.org\/stories\/emptyspace3.html\">between allowances of Afghan custom and visions of burka-less mini-skirt regalia<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 (Note: I linked to the first site google shows when doing a quick search for how we&#8217;re assimilating our visions of Afghanistan.)\u00c2\u00a0 Iraq is not Afghanistan &#8212; only in the 1990s under sanctions did it devolve into a third world economy, but the essential point of equating whatever the heck we&#8217;re wearing as the end all and representation of &#8220;Freedom&#8221; &#8482; holds forth nonetheless.<\/p>\n<p>Oh well.\u00c2\u00a0 It is not as though anybody reads this comic strip.\u00c2\u00a0 I mean, really.\u00c2\u00a0 Crankshaft?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Taken from &#8220;Josh Reads&#8221;, who adds the essential commentary: Actually, from everything I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve heard, the replacement of a brutal but essentially secular dictatorship with an elected coalition of religious-based political parties has resulted in Western dress becoming less common, not more, in Iraq.
