{"id":2029,"date":"2007-01-23T09:12:27","date_gmt":"2007-01-23T16:12:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/2007\/01\/23\/on-tubes-and-internets\/"},"modified":"2007-01-23T09:12:27","modified_gmt":"2007-01-23T16:12:27","slug":"on-tubes-and-internets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/2007\/01\/23\/on-tubes-and-internets\/","title":{"rendered":"On Tubes and Internets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was sitting in a room that was teaching novices How To Use The Internet.\u00c2\u00a0 It befuddled me a bit &#8212; the instructions were perfectly superfluous and only served to mystify the Internet where the point of thic class, it seemed to me, was breeding familiarity to a group of tech non-savvy people.\u00c2\u00a0 The instructor reached back and bore through the Internet as being developed by the Pentagon for the purpose of sharing information between, breaking the word &#8220;Internet&#8221; into &#8220;inter&#8221; meaning &#8220;between&#8221; and &#8220;network&#8221; meaning &#8220;network&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>We went through that phase as a culture in the 1990s.\u00c2\u00a0 But it was superfluous then as well.<\/p>\n<p>I saw somewhere a reference mocking Senator Ted Stevens&#8217;s &#8220;Series of Tubes&#8221; comment in explaining the Internet in his debate on Net Neutrality as his misplaced role sitting on a Senate committee on decisions that affect the Internet.\u00c2\u00a0 It struck me that this comment has replaced the Bush debate comment about the rumours &#8220;all over the Internets&#8221; &#8212; that&#8217;s plural in case you missed it.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m not entirely sure that the Internet isn&#8217;t a series of tubes, or can be conceptualized as such, which would put him ahead of Bush in this category.\u00c2\u00a0 Nonetheless, a year ago the derisive comment would hit Bush&#8217;s &#8220;Internets&#8221; comment and not Stevens&#8217;s &#8220;Tubes&#8221; comment.\u00c2\u00a0 I wonder if a year from now who will make the next comment of that type&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was sitting in a room that was teaching novices How To Use The Internet.\u00c2\u00a0 It befuddled me a bit &#8212; the instructions were perfectly superfluous and only served to mystify the Internet where the point of thic class, it seemed to me, was breeding familiarity to a group of tech non-savvy people.\u00c2\u00a0 The instructor [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-2029","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2029","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=2029"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2029\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=2029"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=2029"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=2029"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
