{"id":18475,"date":"2019-09-06T17:49:55","date_gmt":"2019-09-07T00:49:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/?p=18475"},"modified":"2019-09-08T13:44:59","modified_gmt":"2019-09-08T20:44:59","slug":"humane-and-vampiric","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/2019\/09\/06\/humane-and-vampiric\/","title":{"rendered":"humane and vampiric"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An explanation for a piece of agit prop somewhere else in the world, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-nz\/news\/world\/slovenia-has-another-trump-statue-this-one-has-vampire-teeth\/ar-AAGDGOX\">directed at US President Trump<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Like all populists, the statue has two faces,&#8221; Mr. Schlegl added.\u00c2\u00a0 &#8220;One is humane and nice, the other is that of a vampire.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This strikes me as rote, an instant gnabbing of stock commentary whether or not it fits the situation.\u00c2\u00a0 Say what you will about Trump, and parse out his two (or more faces) &#8212; not one of them is a forged smile at you.<\/p>\n<p>Reading Brett Easton Ellis&#8217;s not terribly deep but interesting enough &#8220;Declaration of Indifference&#8221; regarding the election of President Trump, White.\u00c2\u00a0 Giving him some ugly company &#8212; I noted the book when I saw Milo Yiannopolis&#8217;s (sp?) book (one of those things\u00c2\u00a0an extension of his brand such that you can&#8217;t imagine being published without his mug on the cover) &#8212; and the &#8220;If You Like&#8221; Recommended to &#8220;White by Brett Easton Ellis&#8221;.\u00c2\u00a0 Two gay jackasses, I suppose, is the theory.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s actually there that Brett Easton Ellis has the most to say &#8212; a tad tired of the &#8220;magical gay elf&#8221; trope in movies like Moonlight.\u00c2\u00a0 Here he&#8217;s kind of playing the identity politics game as much as anyone:\u00c2\u00a0 he wants to see more gay jackasses represented in Hollywood productions and arts and entertainments.\u00c2\u00a0 The book is at its best when moving over his various twitter controversies.<\/p>\n<p>So we get a whiff of neo-conservatism as he fends against the &#8220;Resistance&#8221; of his upper class Los Angeles Hollywood environment, wondering why the heck his community gave the key to the city to a (heterosexual) porn star who broke a nda.\u00c2\u00a0 I understand much of the fatigue of the moment.\u00c2\u00a0 But he&#8217;s disingenuous &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/news\/q-and-a\/bret-easton-ellis-thinks-youre-overreacting-to-donald-trump\">shocked by the New Yorker asking him about political commentary<\/a> as though he wouldn&#8217;t expect it, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/books\/la-et-fob-festival-of-books-bret-easton-ellis-new-yorker-reaction-20190414-story.html\">so complaining it to the Los Angeles Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He is correct on some scores &#8212; just what the hell was anyone supposed to think of the constant claim of Hillary Clinton as &#8220;the most qualified presidential candidate&#8221; ever? &#8212; and off in other ways:\u00c2\u00a0 no difference between Obama and Trump on immigration &#8212; really?\u00c2\u00a0 (Even granting the insanity of the &#8220;Resistance&#8221; in envisioning a more open borders than will be feasible.)<\/p>\n<p>I see, spotlighted perhaps the work of the same Powells worker cross referencing Milo with Ellis, that the David Shields anti-Trump book Nobody Hates Trump More than Trump has a cover blurb from Ellis calling it the only anti-Trump book that speaks to him.\u00c2\u00a0 Maybe this serves as a mea culpa, or a back-tracking.\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 And this gets to his current problems with the culture.<\/p>\n<p><em>In Vimi Bajaj\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s essay on V.S. Naipaul in the &#8220;Writer\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Chronicle,&#8221; she argues that he was a great writer only early on, when he was compassionate, and is now no longer of interest, because he hates most of humanity; such a formulation would eliminate everything from Petronius\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s &#8220;The Satyricon&#8221; (1st Century A.D.) to Michel Houellebecq\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s &#8220;Submission&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0(2015).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Reminds me of seeing in the wake of Trump&#8217;s election a Literature professor declaring that she was now going to emphasize empathy in her syllabus selections.<\/p>\n<p><em>The three principal NYT theater critics \u00e2\u20ac\u201d Alexis Soloski, Jesse Green, and Ben Brantley \u00e2\u20ac\u201d conduct a symposium on the state of American theater in the age of Trump. All are sublimely oblivious of the extent to which they each embody everything that drove five million Obama voters to Trump<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>I take a gander at the NYT a and e section, particularly on the theater, here and there by happenstance, and have commented on it on this here damned blog.\u00c2\u00a0 Completely separate from anyone&#8217;s analysis anywhere, I note it is self-parodic&#8230;\u00c2\u00a0 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2018\/10\/06\/28-reasons-why-the-left-must-alter-its-strategy-if-it-wants-to-win-in-2020_partner\/\">See here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/what-the-fuck-is-wrong-with-bret-easton-ellis?ref=scroll\">Along with battling against this type of hyperbole<\/a>.<\/p>\n<article class=\"Body\">\n<div class=\"Body__content\">\n<div class=\"Mobiledoc\">\n<p><em>I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m sorry that Bret is bored with discussions of how our country is teetering on the brink of fascism, but our duty as citizens matters now.
