{"id":17740,"date":"2018-10-09T19:43:50","date_gmt":"2018-10-10T02:43:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/?p=17740"},"modified":"2018-10-09T19:49:38","modified_gmt":"2018-10-10T02:49:38","slug":"17740","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/2018\/10\/09\/17740\/","title":{"rendered":"Bredesen is a Republican, so why are conservatives upset with Taylor Swift?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fivethirtyeight.com\/features\/how-crazy-is-it-that-the-senate-and-house-might-move-in-opposite-directions-this-year\/\">Conventional wisdom.<\/a>.. and we gauge the purple states turn blue and the red states move further red for this election.<\/p>\n<p>Tennessee:\u00c2\u00a0 Polls had shown Marsha Blackburn polling ahead of Phil Bredesen, where before it had been even &#8211; putting all this time (enough for the one &#8220;political forecaster that refuses to do toss-ups&#8221; to give Bredesen the inched edge).\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s possible that the &#8220;Kavanaugh Effect&#8221; only revealed the numbers that were there already and would have been realized one way or the other &#8212; the twist here being that this one is the Democrat who came out for confirming Kavanaugh &#8212; and indeed, against Charles Schumer as party leader, and indeed is trying very hard to remind everyone that he was &#8220;The Best Republican Governor&#8221; Tennessee ever had&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>(Seriously, I don&#8217;t know what makes him a Democrat.)<\/p>\n<p>Which makes <a href=\"http:\/\/reason.com\/blog\/2018\/10\/08\/taylor-swift-kanye-west-political-divide\">Taylor Swift&#8217;s support<\/a> &#8230; all the more interesting.\u00c2\u00a0 And I suppose this is an elliptical way to address that matter&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em><span id=\"react-root\"> For a lot of us, we may never find a candidate or party with whom we agree 100% on every issue, but we have to vote anyway.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Bredesen will now completely disavow the reasons that Taylor Swift gave for supporting him.<\/p>\n<p>And maybe this particular drop of Bredesen in the polls is the result of the left flank disillusioned&#8230; and with that, that is Taylor Swift holding back up &#8212; and, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-news\/taylor-swift-endorsement-733776\/\">cute headline Rolling Stone<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 We&#8217;ll know that she made the difference for certain if Bredesen wins by less than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/music\/2018\/10\/09\/taylor-swift-inspired-65-000-people-register-vote-says-vote-org-tennessee-phil-bredesen-trump\/1574916002\/\">65,000<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Does <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennessean.com\/story\/news\/2018\/10\/08\/taylor-swift-marsha-blackburns-republican-backers-slam-bredesen-endrosement\/1565221002\/\">Ivory Tower even have a meaning<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>Arizona:\u00c2\u00a0 Democratic candidate for Senate&#8230; Kyrsten Sinema is getting in hot water for&#8230; e<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/music\/2018\/10\/09\/taylor-swift-inspired-65-000-people-register-vote-says-vote-org-tennessee-phil-bredesen-trump\/1574916002\/\">xaggerating her Horatio Alger background<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 A little bit different than John Edwards &#8212; not so much the son of a mill worker as the son of a mill owner &#8212; her story ends up being one where she grew up dirt poor but instead was claiming to have been dust poor.\u00c2\u00a0 Did the shabby gas station she lived in for a time have running water and a stove?<br \/>\nThe other grand issue with Sinema is interesting&#8230; a one time Green Party activist, she now considers Joe Manchin her political lodestar.\u00c2\u00a0 Where did some anti-war flyers of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azcentral.com\/story\/opinion\/op-ed\/laurieroberts\/2018\/09\/10\/martha-mcsallys-pink-tutu-attack-kyrsten-sinema-debunked\/1261076002\/\">skeleton troops<\/a> fit into the picture, I don&#8217;t know&#8230; and, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azcentral.com\/story\/opinion\/op-ed\/ej-montini\/2018\/09\/17\/kyrsten-sinema-martha-mcsally-child-prostitution-campaign-ad\/1332670002\/\">hm<\/a>&#8230; well, it a<a href=\"https:\/\/ijr.com\/fact-or-fiction-sinema-mcsally\/\">ll needs to be blun<\/a>t, don&#8217;t it?<br \/>\nAll of which adds up to the old saw &#8212; it was Winston Churchill that said, if you weren&#8217;t a radical in your youth you have no heart; if you&#8217;re not an opportunistic weathervane later, you have no head.<\/p>\n<p>Nevada:\u00c2\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cheddar.com\/videos\/the-view-from-nevada-senate-race-too-close-for-gop-comfort.amp\">Puzzled<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;If you look what&#8217;s going on right now in society, it&#8217;s an old playbook,&#8221; Rep. Rosen said in an interview with Cheddar. &#8220;When Sen. Heller photoshops my eyebrows, or they ask, &#8216;Why does a woman feel she&#8217;s qualified?&#8217; Those are just very sexist questions, it&#8217;s an old playbook that they&#8217;re trying to use, because Sen. Heller specifically cant stand on his record, and so he needs to attack me as a woman.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Hm.\u00c2\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rosenfornevada\/status\/1040008462153859072?lang=en\">Would they do this to a man<\/a>?\u00c2\u00a0 Actually&#8230; maybe.<\/p>\n<p>I suppose the obvious response from Heller is to make it the theme that &#8220;Representative Jacky Rosen is raising eyebrows&#8221;&#8230; on this and that liberal thingy.<\/p>\n<p>Florida:\u00c2\u00a0 The race moves in a few different spots.\u00c2\u00a0 First of all, the two candidates are &#8212; reportedly &#8212; just boring everyone.\u00c2\u00a0 Second, apparently Charlie Crist is claiming that Bill Nelson is just getting <a href=\"http:\/\/sunshinestatenews.com\/story\/backroom-briefing-confusion-ageism-senate-camps-trade-blows\">too damned old.<\/a>..<br \/>\nShould go over well in Florida?<\/p>\n<p>Well, youth and vitality and excitement are seen in the governor&#8217;s race&#8230; which is what&#8217;s going to have to propel one of the two senate candidates across the line &#8212;<\/p>\n<p>Funny how a self published Ron DeSantis &#8220;tea party&#8221; book is getting played differently&#8230; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridaphoenix.com\/2018\/09\/11\/ron-desantis-takes-on-obama\/\">see here<\/a>, as opposed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alternet.org\/election-03918\/ron-desantis-book-thurgood-marshall-founding-fathers-slavery?amp\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Worth noting:<\/p>\n<p><em>One of the most disturbing claims he made in the book was that Thurgood Marshall, the first African-American Supreme Court justice, was wrong to suggest the founding fathers&#8217; failure to abolish slavery in the Constitution was a fundamental flaw.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;For someone like Marshall, this failure overshadows the numerous and long-lasting political achievements embodied in the structural foundations of the government that have nothing to do with the institution of slavery,&#8221; DeSantis said. [&#8230;]<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>If DeSantis had simply left it at the fact that tolerating slavery was essential to get the Southern states on board, he might have had a point. But for him to claim the Constitution somehow preordained the end of slavery as written is pure whitewashing, given that it took a bloody civil war to amend it to do so.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>That particular point would be echoing the stated views of Abraham Lincoln&#8217;s &#8212; politically convenient and not those of the Abolitionists he was sliding into an electoral coalition.\u00c2\u00a0 For what it&#8217;s worth.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.star-telegram.com\/news\/politics-government\/article219732670.html\">Texas<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 Ted Cruz decided CNN not part of his strategy, not who he&#8217;s speaking for, gonna try for an &#8220;equal time&#8221; with Fox News?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Conventional wisdom&#8230; and we gauge the purple states turn blue and the red states move further red for this election.
