{"id":17141,"date":"2018-03-12T16:28:35","date_gmt":"2018-03-12T23:28:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/?p=17141"},"modified":"2018-03-12T16:28:35","modified_gmt":"2018-03-12T23:28:35","slug":"new-national-fronting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/2018\/03\/12\/new-national-fronting\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8230; new national fronting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So the Mother Jones magazine does one on the\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2018\/03\/california-secessionists-are-hoping-for-a-trump-bump\/\">California Secessionist Movement<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 Yeah, and Southern Oregon with some Northern California becomes the state of Jefferson, Eastern Washington splits into its own state, and the rest of Oregon joins the rest of Washington &#8212; perhaps along with Vancouver and British Columbia &#8212; to form Cascadia.\u00c2\u00a0 (Or is Ectopia?)<\/p>\n<p><em>The following day, a rival group of independence supporters gathered on the north side of the state capitol in Sacramento. Speaking through a bullhorn to a crowd of around 20 people and 2 dogs,\u00c2\u00a0Louis Marinelli, the 31-year-old cofounder of\u00c2\u00a0Yes California, called for \u00e2\u20ac\u0153a political divorce on Valentine\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Day based on irreconcilable differences.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\u00c2\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The noontime rally was the official \u00e2\u20ac\u0153relaunch\u00e2\u20ac\u009d of Yes California\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Calexit\u00e2\u20ac\u009d campaign, which got off to a bumpy start in late 2016. Marinelli was living\u00c2\u00a0in Russia\u00c2\u00a0at the time, sparking skepticism about his intentions. (The California National Party\u00c2\u00a0tweeted, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Hands off California, Putin. We won\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t take orders from your puppet Moscow Marinelli.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d) <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Sure.\u00c2\u00a0 But the question that looms &#8212; when the Russian government starts cheering the secessionist movement on, playing it up hard and fast on their state &#8220;Russia TV&#8221; show, maybe even tossing in a whole bunch of facebook pages algogrithmed right at you&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>What are you supposed to do then?<\/p>\n<p><em>But now Marinelli says he has moved back to California for good. Asked if the cloud of his Russian interlude still hangs over Calexit, he laughs. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Clouds bring rain, and rain makes flowers. We\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re looking forward to springtime.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Springtime for&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Then there&#8217;s this movement:<\/p>\n<p><em>In 2014, Silicon Valley billionaire Tim Draper floated a plan to create\u00c2\u00a0\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Six Californias,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\u00c2\u00a0perfectly highlighting the state\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s cultural and economic divides by establishing four affluent bluish enclaves and two poor conservative ones. (He has since downsized his plan to\u00c2\u00a0three Californias.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I vote for 12 Californias.\u00c2\u00a0 Any fewer and it&#8217;s just bandages on the problem.\u00c2\u00a0 Of course, now I&#8217;d have to look at California and poke up a map.<\/p>\n<p><em>Yes California\u00c2\u00a0paints\u00c2\u00a0independent California as a progressive utopia with universal health care, free college, lower taxes and a bare-bones military. However, Marinelli says, breaking away doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t just appeal to disaffected coastal liberals. He cites Yes California supporters who also back\u00c2\u00a0Jefferson, a nearly eight-decade effort to break off Northern California (and part of Oregon) into a new state. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153A lot of people up in the Jefferson movement think that if they help Calexit become a reality, and California secedes from the union, they then can have a self-determination referendum of their own to secede from California and rejoin the American union as the 51st state. That\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s kind of a workaround, right?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Citizens of Jefferson: Don&#8217;t put the cart before the horse.\u00c2\u00a0 This could end up badly for you.<\/p>\n<p><em>Polls find that\u00c2\u00a0about one-third\u00c2\u00a0of Californians support secession. (About\u00c2\u00a0a quarter of all Americans\u00c2\u00a0say states should be able to secede.)
