{"id":17088,"date":"2018-02-16T18:21:44","date_gmt":"2018-02-17T01:21:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/?p=17088"},"modified":"2018-02-17T16:54:18","modified_gmt":"2018-02-17T23:54:18","slug":"blips-on-the-horror-screen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/2018\/02\/16\/blips-on-the-horror-screen\/","title":{"rendered":"blips on the horror screen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/florida-shooting-fbi-was-alerted-about-threat-posted-youtube-n848316\">Lost on something here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/briannasacks\/the-fbi-was-warned-about-a-school-shooting-threat-from?bfsplash&amp;utm_term=.ry8LvyNp6M#.uwdRaYQ6Pq\">BuzzFeed News first reported<\/a> a YouTube user called &#8220;nikolas cruz&#8221; wrote &#8220;Im going to be a professional school shooter&#8221; in a comment posted last September on a video uploaded by a Mississippi bail bondsman.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>It was not immediately clear why the FBI would not have been able to identify the author of the post if that username was, in fact, his real name.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The man is butchering the English language.\u00c2\u00a0 There is no such thing as &#8220;professional&#8221; school shooter &#8212; professional means that you&#8217;re getting paid for it.\u00c2\u00a0 Unless the kid has plans for a tell all book, or other means of monetizing his crime (and I imagine if we get that far from precedent, all moneys earned as he wails away in prison would through lawsuit go to the family&#8217;s victims), this doesn&#8217;t work.<\/p>\n<p>Or maybe we&#8217;ve redefined the word?<\/p>\n<p>Interesting to see a graph of school shootings (and term not as defined by the &#8220;Anytown club&#8221; which apps the number to 18, for as many as they can spot) &#8212; over the last two decades &#8212; broken up by town population.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m not sure what the graph is set out to prove, but I suppose it&#8217;s good a statistic of mindless productions as anything.<\/p>\n<p>In other bits and pieces of our damning national psyche&#8230; I note this.<\/p>\n<p>As the grandma snooping in on this boy&#8217;s journal gets feted by most everyone,\u00c2\u00a0the perhaps plausible perhaps not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/crime\/article\/Student-arrested-in-alleged-Washington-state-12615363.php\">&#8220;Defense&#8221; is (for good and bad) all but ignored in the AP article<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0and write ups.\u00c2\u00a0 An after thought.\u00c2\u00a0<em><br \/>\nPublic Defender Rachel Forde noted the gun and the grenade shells were legal to possess. She said the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153musings and ventings\u00e2\u20ac\u009d in O\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Connor\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s journal weren\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t enough evidence to support a charge of attempted murder.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The dog won&#8217;t hunt, in the court of public opinion, and there appear to be enough thingies beyond this to corroborate horrors anyways.\u00c2\u00a0 And yet I pause for a second on it.\u00c2\u00a0 I once met someone who was expelled from the Oregon Public school system under a then-recently passed law for, as he said, &#8220;i &#8220;rumor and innuendo and venting private journal entries&#8221;.\u00c2\u00a0 And though I do have the thought for him that &#8212; well, clearly the public school system wasn&#8217;t much working for him and whatever alternate system he had once thrown out of school hopefully proceeded well enough&#8230; but I&#8217;m still left at that thought where you throw the threat assessment in the &#8220;reading his journals&#8221; and it doesn&#8217;t receive anything of a &#8220;wait one second&#8221; pause.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lost on something here.
