{"id":16727,"date":"2017-08-23T18:39:02","date_gmt":"2017-08-24T01:39:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/?p=16727"},"modified":"2017-08-23T18:39:02","modified_gmt":"2017-08-24T01:39:02","slug":"on-rotten-legacies-from-people-who-were-people","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/2017\/08\/23\/on-rotten-legacies-from-people-who-were-people\/","title":{"rendered":"on rotten legacies from people who were people"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Interesting.\u00c2\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/md-politics\/md-senate-president-slams-hogan-for-fast-vote-to-remove-taney-statue\/2017\/08\/17\/41833b12-8390-11e7-ab27-1a21a8e006ab_story.html?utm_term=.ba4b21eaab39\">What is Maryland to do about this Roger Taney statue<\/a>, the man &#8212; Supreme Court Justice &#8212; best known for authoring the Dred Scott Decision?\u00c2\u00a0 In a previous bout of statue removing, they decided to &#8220;compromise&#8221; by sticking up fellow Marylander and Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall statue.<\/p>\n<p>I tend to want to keep these things up, and contextualize them&#8230; maybe change the meaning of what the heck a statue is representing, though I suppose that means a degeneration of the Marshall statue.\u00c2\u00a0 Here they are &#8212; Supreme Court Justices from Maryland!<\/p>\n<p>Which, theoretically, would have put me on the side for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/md-politics\/md-senate-president-slams-hogan-for-fast-vote-to-remove-taney-statue\/2017\/08\/17\/41833b12-8390-11e7-ab27-1a21a8e006ab_story.html?utm_term=.ba4b21eaab39\">now embattled Maryland state Senator Mike Miller<\/a>, except then he&#8217;ll lob this at us&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em>Miller, an avid reader of history, also defended Taney\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s character, describing him as a man with a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153complex\u00e2\u20ac\u009d past.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Unlike George Washington who freed his slaves upon his death, Taney freed his slaves early in his life,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d the letter said.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Roger Brooke Taney was not a Confederate officer and he remained loyal to the Union until his death in 1864,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Miller wrote. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Many historians have debated the conflicting anti-slavery words and works of Roger Brooke Taney.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Might be an interesting subject for a book, I suppose, in exploring the what of the great compromises upon compromises in societal racism on not wholly evil men.\u00c2\u00a0 But put it this way &#8212; the founder of the Ku Klux Klan &#8212; or, something of some early key figure &#8212; ended u<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nathan_Bedford_Forrest#Speaks_to_black_Southerners\">p denouncing the entity<\/a> as it turned to a more violent vigilance and into the role as military wing of the Democratic Party.\u00c2\u00a0 All very interesting.
