{"id":16490,"date":"2017-03-31T17:32:24","date_gmt":"2017-04-01T00:32:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/?p=16490"},"modified":"2017-03-31T17:32:24","modified_gmt":"2017-04-01T00:32:24","slug":"why-they-call-it-the-elite-media","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/2017\/03\/31\/why-they-call-it-the-elite-media\/","title":{"rendered":"why they call it the &#8220;elite media&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m been stuck ona couple unexamined class assumptions in the New York Times as of late.<br \/>\nFirst a reasonably cognizant article examining some middle class or even lower middle class entries into university, but told in a quasi-anthropology way &#8212; the line that throws me for a loop is that there is no applying for the elite colleges here &#8212; they want to go where they feel they belong.\u00c2\u00a0 Or, you know, given that they&#8217;re not at the very tip top of &#8220;genius&#8221; level &#8212; the uber 13 year old chess masters and on &#8212; and thus wouldn&#8217;t get full scholarship, somewhere where they might half afford.<br \/>\nAnd then there&#8217;s this odd line in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/03\/30\/opinion\/president-trump-vs-big-bird.html\">Nicholas Kristoff op-ed defending arts funding<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Singer has a terrific recent book, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Ethics in the Real World,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d that wrestles with how much we should donate to charity, and whether wearing a $10,000 watch is a sign of good taste, or of shallow narcissism.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Raise your head if you, out there in the real world, have had this real world concern in looking at your wrist and having guilt pains that this\u00c2\u00a0 $10,000 watch you are wearing might comes across as too ostentatious.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m been stuck ona couple unexamined class assumptions in the New York Times as of late.
