{"id":15090,"date":"2015-12-02T19:05:40","date_gmt":"2015-12-03T02:05:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/?p=15090"},"modified":"2015-12-02T19:05:40","modified_gmt":"2015-12-03T02:05:40","slug":"curling-world-divided-over-new-broom-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/2015\/12\/02\/curling-world-divided-over-new-broom-technology\/","title":{"rendered":"Curling World Divided over new broom technology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Big dooings with what it means to compete in the world of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/curling\/curling-canada-adopts-ban-on-controversial-broom\/\">Curling<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Curling Canada has followed the lead of the World Curling Federation in banning controversial broom heads for the 2015-16 season.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Olympic gold medallists Brad Jacobs, Brad Gushue, Jennifer Jones and former world champion Glenn Howard were among 50 Canadian and international teams who signed a statement in October, saying their teams will not sweep with broom heads that have &#8220;directional fabric.&#8221;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Coarse material on the broom heads creates a sandpaper effect on the ice, and with it sweepers have been able to manipulate the rock\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s trajectory in ways they never could before.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Fearing that throwing accuracy and athleticism would be diminished, the curlers said they want to protect &#8220;the integrity of the game&#8221; in refusing to use the brush heads.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>The athletes\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 decision to police themselves had the sport\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s governing bodies scrambling to come up with policies and guidelines for brush head technology.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/11\/20\/sports\/facing-control-issues-curling-draws-line-at-high-tech-brooms.html?ref=topics&amp;_r=0\">Fights are breaking out<\/a>&#8230; by the makers of the brooms&#8230;<\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-5\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"306\" data-total-count=\"3373\"><em>To Archie Manavian, the president of Hardline, the agreement smelled of conspiracy.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153This is nothing other than corporate bullying,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Manavian said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The bottom line is we have not changed anything on the IcePad the last three years. The complaints only started this year \u00e2\u20ac\u201d the reason for that is our competitors are jealous of our success. Our broom is the best one out there \u00e2\u20ac\u201d there\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s no question about it \u00e2\u20ac\u201d and sales started to skyrocket.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Scott Taylor, the president of BalancePlus, said: \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t really respond to his comments. The thing that needs to be done by his company or others is to provide equipment that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s good for the sport. We\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d hate to see anything in the way of equipment development that doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t make sense anymore.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"306\" data-total-count=\"3373\">And you do see what makes the traditionalists upset over the new brooming technology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"306\" data-total-count=\"3373\"><em>Pete Fenson, a bronze medalist for the United States at the 2006 Turin Games, learned the game using cornhusk brooms while growing up in northern Minnesota. The new brooms, with carbon fiber shafts, allow curlers to sweep paths for stones, also known as rocks, in such ways that \u00e2\u20ac\u0153it almost looks like they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re on remote control,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said Fenson, who has a sponsorship agreement with BalancePlus. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153In the past, players that have the best feel for the game, work the hardest, are in the best shape and understand the game the best \u00e2\u20ac\u201d those are the ones who were usually the most successful.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"306\" data-total-count=\"3373\">Clearly the world of Curling has to take a stand somewhere.\u00c2\u00a0 I mean, next thing you know, we&#8217;ll have the brooms able to throw marbles out at the competitors, and then it&#8217;d just be a whole other game.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Big dooings with what it means to compete in the world of Curling.
