“America’s Nerd Problem”?<\/a><\/p>\n

Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson has been the recipient of a seemingly bizarre political backlash \u00e2\u20ac\u201d after the conservative magazine National Review penned a takedown cover story on the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Cosmos\u00e2\u20ac\u009d host last week depicting him as a smug, intellectual bully.<\/em><\/p>\n

The story struck many as odd given Tyson\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s gentle, geeky presentation style. Comedian Bill Maher had Tyson on his HBO show over the weekend, trying to make sense of the backlash.
\n\u00e2\u20ac\u0153You\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re a scientist, and a black one, who\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s smarter than [conservatives] are,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Maher quipped.
\nThe line got laughs, but it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s worth remembering that Tyson served the George W. Bush administration as a member of the Commission on Moon, Mars and Beyond in 2004. Conservatives have no problem harnessing Tyson\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s intellect.<\/em><\/p>\n

The “Adlai Egghead” problem rears its ugly head in America, I suppose.<\/p>\n
