{"id":13699,"date":"2014-02-19T20:00:24","date_gmt":"2014-02-20T03:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/?p=13699"},"modified":"2014-02-19T20:00:24","modified_gmt":"2014-02-20T03:00:24","slug":"rush-holt-and-doc-hastings-are-retiring","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/2014\/02\/19\/rush-holt-and-doc-hastings-are-retiring\/","title":{"rendered":"Rush Holt and Doc Hastings are retiring."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rush Holt is retiring.\u00c2\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/rundown\/congressman-vs-machine-rocket-scientist-rep-rush-holt-bests-watson\/\">He is noted for having beaten a computer on Jeopardy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There is no interesting piece of trivia for retiring Congress critter Doc Hastings.\u00c2\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/2013\/08\/13\/hey-doc-hastings-made-saturday-night-live-kind-of\/\">Unless being played by a black man, accidentally, on Saturday Night Live<\/a> counts?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/atr.rollcall.com\/doc-hastings-to-retire-from-congress\/\">I am curious on this sort of automatic comment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-message \" dir=\"auto\" data-role=\"message\">\n<p><em>Pretty clear the retirements of so many of the &#8220;old bulls&#8221; particularly in the House, but also in the Senate is a result of polarization of the bodies and inability to find common ground on nearly any issue.<br \/>\nBlame goes to both Republicans and Democrats for failing to put the national interest above parochial concerns and partisanship. Having said that, the GOP\/Tea Party class of 2010, who&#8217;s primary objective is to prevent government from functioning, deserves the lion&#8217;s share of the blame.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Another thought: he&#8217;s been there twenty years.\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s a decent amount of time.\u00c2\u00a0 A career politician who has had a career of it.\u00c2\u00a0 Whether or not he thinks things are getting done.\u00c2\u00a0 (<a href=\"http:\/\/seattletimes.com\/html\/editorials\/2022914131_editdebtceiling18xml.html\">And we see his post-retirement acting round about here, where he has no need to cow-tow in any direction<\/a>, and so, raises the debt ceiling.\u00c2\u00a0 Though, I doubt he was ever in the need of sitting in &#8220;catch and release&#8221; mode for Boehner in rounding up the necessary Republican votes while letting Republicans stay to the right as need be&#8230;)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2014\/02\/doc-hastings-retirement-103493.html#ixzz2tpMQoJtg\">Possible Republican replacements for Hastings include state representatives David Taylor and Brad Klippert and state Sen.
