{"id":13418,"date":"2013-10-31T08:57:44","date_gmt":"2013-10-31T15:57:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/?p=13418"},"modified":"2013-10-31T17:19:54","modified_gmt":"2013-11-01T00:19:54","slug":"your-annual-halloween-costume-controversy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/2013\/10\/31\/your-annual-halloween-costume-controversy\/","title":{"rendered":"your annual halloween costume controversy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For the past decade at least, we&#8217;ve had this annual Halloween tradition where, for instance, a site like the Huffington Post will display those over sexy costumes, which will be the most viewed page for the moment. \u00c2\u00a0And the question &#8212; outraged or titillated &#8212; be sure to study each image and \u00c2\u00a0decide for yourself.<\/p>\n<p>You traverse from there to the appropriateness of the &#8220;sexy inanimate object&#8221; &#8212; there&#8217;s a sexy pizza costume out there, as the Daily Show mentioned. \u00c2\u00a0To which I end up thinking &#8212; oh, why not? \u00c2\u00a0Since we&#8217;ve traveled into this realm, we may as well add this surrealistic flair to this. \u00c2\u00a0Better that than the appropriation of &#8220;sexy Indian woman&#8221;. \u00c2\u00a0(Here we get some side-wind from &#8220;the right&#8221;, complaining to a college that they&#8217;re taking the &#8220;fun&#8221; out of Halloween for sending a letter <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2013\/10\/24\/college_takes_small_stand_against_terrible_halloween_costumes_annoys_fox_news\/\">suggesting students shouldn&#8217;t do this one<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0&#8212; curious as they&#8217;d be some of the ones who&#8217;d be pooh-poohing a hyper- sexualized culture, if not the sexism track.)<\/p>\n<p>Okay. \u00c2\u00a0All this aside. \u00c2\u00a0I was watching a parade of Halloween revelers this last weekend. \u00c2\u00a0Twenty something year old club goer types, I suppose. \u00c2\u00a0And there were those &#8220;skanky&#8221; costumes. \u00c2\u00a0What puzzled me about some of them was&#8230; for the life of me I couldn&#8217;t tell what some of them were. \u00c2\u00a0It was like&#8230; a tight fitting shirt and short shorts. \u00c2\u00a0Which in most other settings I might figure was maybe de norm &#8212; except these outfits were clearly costumes &#8212; made of a polyster fabric type not normally worn, and not what is worn in any even the circumstance described. \u00c2\u00a0In tow with a man wearing a Monsters (as in the series of Monsters movies) &#8212; green one eyed kooky bulging shirt &#8212; I&#8217;m thinking &#8230; I guess that&#8217;s a sexy sailor girl &#8212; maybe? \u00c2\u00a0I &#8230; think the color scheme is right with that&#8230; maybe?<\/p>\n<p>And here my problem with the &#8220;sexy Halloween costumes&#8221; becomes one where &#8230; Now I just want to be able to identify what the costume is a sexy version of. \u00c2\u00a0But this may mark a full turn. \u00c2\u00a0From &#8220;Sexy thing that makes some sense to make sexy&#8221; to &#8220;sexy thing that makes no sense to make sexy&#8221; to just &#8220;sexy&#8221;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For the past decade at least, we&#8217;ve had this annual Halloween tradition where, for instance, a site like the Huffington Post will display those over sexy costumes, which will be the most viewed page for the moment. \u00c2\u00a0And the question &#8212; outraged or titillated &#8212; be sure to study each image and \u00c2\u00a0decide for yourself.
