{"id":11927,"date":"2013-05-20T09:03:22","date_gmt":"2013-05-20T16:03:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/?p=11927"},"modified":"2013-05-20T09:03:22","modified_gmt":"2013-05-20T16:03:22","slug":"i-had-been-placing-my-bets-on-when-wed-see-that-whats-the-matter-with-portland-headline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/2013\/05\/20\/i-had-been-placing-my-bets-on-when-wed-see-that-whats-the-matter-with-portland-headline\/","title":{"rendered":"I had been placing my bets on when we&#8217;d see that &#8220;What&#8217;s the Matter with Portland&#8221; headline."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>All indications are that tomorrow, the city of Portland will join this list of &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fluoridealert.org\/content\/communities\/\">Communities which have rejected Fluoride since 1990<\/a>&#8220;, thus pushing out a new wave of the headlines ala the new &#8220;insert the name of geographical unit&#8221; unit of &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/health_and_science\/medical_examiner\/2013\/05\/portland_fluoride_vote_will_medical_science_trump_fear_and_doubt.html\">What&#8217;s the Matter with &#8212; &#8220;<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>For this list, a top 40 city would be quite a coup &#8212; somewhat thumping all these (and let&#8217;s toss out Australia and Canada for the moment) largely small towns. \u00c2\u00a0Albuquerque being about the best comprarble unit for comparisons sake, and that figures.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently a whole swarth of Nebraska had a big Fluoride overthrow party on Election day 2008. \u00c2\u00a0And Utah in 2002.<\/p>\n<p>I take it as a theory of a tribal sense of politics that if we could just transplant a bunch of those Nebraskans and Utahans and have them running around the city actively opposing Water Fluoridation, as well as calling for &#8212; for instance &#8212; Obama&#8217;s Impeachment over Benghazi and waxing poetic about never ever having their guns taken away from them&#8211; Portland would end up voting for Fluoridation.<\/p>\n<p>As it were&#8230; we get this:<\/p>\n<p><em>While there are surely conspiracy theorists and anti-government militants among the ranks of today\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Clean Water Portland,\u00c2\u00a0<b>the organization\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s spokespeople and supporters generally do not express the conservative rhetoric (such as invoking \u00e2\u20ac\u0153socialized medicine\u00e2\u20ac\u009d) that defines fluoride opposition elsewhere. Such tactics would never work in this liberal city<\/b>. Instead, opponents rely on attachment to the environment and natural health care, as well as the current mistrust of pretty much all institutions.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153We have many better alternatives that people aren\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t speaking about,\u00c2\u00a0<b>including Obamacare\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s federal dollars to support the state for low-income oral health<\/b>,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d says Barnes, of Clean Water Portland. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153What is alarming to me \u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 is that [fluoride includes] known contaminants \u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t think it makes any sense to add more contaminants to our kids\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 water.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424127887323398204578488290293116774.html\">And then you can count on the Wall Street Journal to dip about for &#8220;local color&#8221;<\/a>. \u00c2\u00a0Because we need the opinion of The Decemberists to balance the opinion of the Dandy Warhols.<\/p>\n<p><em>Pro-fluoriders have their own rock-band supporters. Among them, apparently, is Colin Meloy, member of Portland&#8217;s revered alternative band, The Decemberists. &#8220;How can you hate on the GOP for being creationist science deniers and then go on about how vaccines and fluoridation are poison,&#8221; reads a January post on his Twitter account, which is linked from the website colinmeloy.com. In April, the account tweeted disdain for the anti-fluoride documentary, &#8220;An Inconvenient Tooth.&#8221;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Decemberists Manager Jason Colton declined to comment on the tweets and said no member of the band wishes to discuss fluoridation.
