{"id":11401,"date":"2013-03-13T08:57:03","date_gmt":"2013-03-13T15:57:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/?p=11401"},"modified":"2013-03-13T08:57:03","modified_gmt":"2013-03-13T15:57:03","slug":"the-doctrine-of-nullification-moves-from-demint-to-pyongyang","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/2013\/03\/13\/the-doctrine-of-nullification-moves-from-demint-to-pyongyang\/","title":{"rendered":"The Doctrine of Nullification moves from Demint to Pyongyang"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Something I find interesting about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/03\/12\/world\/asia\/north-korea-says-it-has-nullified-1953-korean-war-armistice.html\">this<\/a>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em>North Korea declared the 1953 Korean War armistice nullified on Monday, following through on a longstanding threat that it renewed last week amid rising tensions with South Korea.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>No, I imagine it is a whole lot of attention grabbing on the North Korean government&#8217;s part, and the usual &#8220;Crisis to stir up support amongst the Populace&#8221; antics of the totalitarian regime &#8211;\u00c2\u00a0and there isn&#8217;t much more to do than a lot of eye rolling, but this brings to mind some existential and definitional questions right about here, with the United Nations and International response&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The United Nations has come out clearly stating that North Korea does not have the power to nullify the agreement, and thus the treaty holds. \u00c2\u00a0It&#8217;s right there in the<a href=\"http:\/\/english.hani.co.kr\/arti\/english_edition\/e_northkorea\/577671.html\"> 1953 Treaty<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Question from the peanut gallery&#8230; don&#8217;t you nullify by simply&#8230; violating the agreement? \u00c2\u00a0Again, this doesn&#8217;t move into the field of policy &#8212; maybe we should just see to it to the end and proceed as though in the end, the Armistice exists&#8230; but it is an odd semantic issue.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Something I find interesting about this&#8230; North Korea declared the 1953 Korean War armistice nullified on Monday, following through on a longstanding threat that it renewed last week amid rising tensions with South Korea.
