Kristol looked dazed, off-kilter, and defeated.<\/p>\n<p>Two weeks of unimaginable bad news undercutting your stance will do that to you.<\/p>\n<p>At one point, this was nearly the exchange:<br \/>\nStewart: <i>But&#8230; how can we re-elect a man who&#8217;s driven us into a ditch, you know?<\/i><br \/>\nKristol: <i>Well, he&#8217;s driven us into a ditch&#8230; well, maybe not a ditch but&#8230;<\/i><br \/>\n(audience applause)<\/p>\n<p>You will notice, too, that just a few days ago George Will used the word &#8220;Empire&#8221;, in his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/content\/opinion\/national\/will\/story\/9255644p-10180764c.html\">forlorn<\/a> column of disappointment:<\/p>\n<p>David Byrne, from his latest album &#8220;Grown Backward&#8221;&#8230; the song is &#8220;Empire&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p>In national elections<br \/>\nIn songs raised on high<br \/>\nWith stirring emotions<br \/>\nAs tears fill your eyes<\/p>\n<p>In democratic fever<br \/>\nFor national defense<br \/>\nI am a mountain [3x]<br \/>\nLike birds upon a fence [2x]<\/p>\n<p>Young artists and writers<br \/>\nPlease heed the call<br \/>\nWhat&#8217;s good for business<br \/>\nIs good for us all<\/p>\n<p>And as it is in Nature<br \/>\nSo it is in life<br \/>\nThe weak among us with perish [3x]<br \/>\nThe strong alone will survive [2x]<\/p>\n<p>Voices like thunder<br \/>\nDecisions like steel<br \/>\nThe past and the future<br \/>\nThey belong to us all<\/p>\n<p>From every mountain<br \/>\nThe water and the air<br \/>\nThe world that we&#8217;ve created [3x]<br \/>\nBy working hand in hand [2x]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>William Kristol&#8211; leading neo-conservative hawk, spokesperson for the Project for a New American Century, and editor of the Weekly Standard&#8211; was on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart last night.
