{"id":10823,"date":"2012-12-02T21:58:15","date_gmt":"2012-12-03T04:58:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/?p=10823"},"modified":"2012-12-02T21:58:15","modified_gmt":"2012-12-03T04:58:15","slug":"in-theaters-now-lincoln","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/2012\/12\/02\/in-theaters-now-lincoln\/","title":{"rendered":"in theaters now, Lincoln"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve heard some positive reviews of the new Lincoln biopic&#8230; from people who like this sort of thing &#8212; who like forms of slow mo speecifying with reminiscent Ken Burns esque\u00c2\u00a0film-making. \u00c2\u00a0It&#8217;s &#8220;Oscar Bait&#8221;, but good Oscar Bait&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/inthesetimes.com\/article\/14175\/lincoln_better_off_undead\">Then there&#8217;s this dissent<\/a>. \u00c2\u00a0Making political points and getting over to&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em>he tension driving the film is between Lincoln\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s conviction that the Constitution must be amended to ban slavery before the Confederacy\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s surrender, and the countervailing political pressures to negotiate an immediate peace and sacrifice all chance of a 13th Amendment. Lincoln\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s argument rests on the status of slaves not as people but as war contraband belonging to the victorious North. The amendment\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s enactment, therefore, is depicted not as a triumph of morality but, as the result of clever lawyering, petty patronage and personal will.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The action centers on the governing elites, depicting Lincoln as the ultimate insider. Thus, if you are only going to see one Lincoln biopic this year, I heartily recommend instead\u00c2\u00a0Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, which\u00e2\u20ac\u201dafter a brief theatrical run this summer\u00e2\u20ac\u201dis now available on DVD.
