{"id":10714,"date":"2012-11-06T10:51:01","date_gmt":"2012-11-06T17:51:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/?p=10714"},"modified":"2012-11-06T10:51:01","modified_gmt":"2012-11-06T17:51:01","slug":"elections-watch-why-not","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.struat.com\/election\/2012\/11\/06\/elections-watch-why-not\/","title":{"rendered":"elections watch.  why not?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.tennessean.com\/politics\/2012\/mark-clayton-says-hes-expecting-victory-but-bob-corker-can-still-stop-by-to-chat\/\">Dateline Tennessee<\/a>&#8230; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wkrn.com\/story\/19917044\/democratic-senate-nominee-not-bothered-by-washington-post-story\">Mark Clayton fires away at the national media<\/a>&#8230;<br \/>\n<em>The Tennessee Democrat running for U.S. Senate fired back Thursday at this week&#8217;s\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/decision2012\/2012s-worst-candidate-with-mark-clayton-tennessee-democrats-hit-bottom\/2012\/10\/22\/77da926e-1b8a-11e2-a146-ccabc9c85c53_story.html\" target=\"_blank\">Washington Post story<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0that said he may be &#8220;2012&#8217;s worst candidate.&#8221;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Mark Clayton, the surprise August primary winner who has been linked to a Virginia anti-gay group, told Nashville&#8217;s News 2 the newspaper is &#8220;not a credible news source.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Wait. \u00c2\u00a0This next line is what sells you on this candidate.<\/p>\n<p><em>He went on to question the Post&#8217;s investigation of President Richard Nixon in the 1970s which led to his eventual resignation.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>&#8220;We would call on the Washington Post to return their Pulitzers until we find out what really happened,&#8221; responded Clayton while sipping ice tea at a restaurant near his rural Nashville area home.\u00c2\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Well&#8230; You can&#8217;t always win.<\/p>\n<p><em>Clayton said he refused interviews with the Washington Post and claims the reporter from the newspaper recently &#8220;jumped out from behind a bush asking him if he would beat Bob Corker.&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>When asked the same question about beating the incumbent Republican senator, Clayton grinned saying, &#8220;of course, of course.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><\/em>See too:<\/p>\n<p>I<em>n an email to reporters Saturday, Clayton said he\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s planning to win Tuesday\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s election.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m expecting victory because we have reached four million Tennessee voters, and most Tennesseans know that Bob Corker betrayed them,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he wrote.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>But Corker, traitor to the people or not, is welcome to stop by his old office on Capitol Hill and share a little advice. The Republican senator might even prove useful:<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I congratulate my opponent for a great race in advance.\u00c2\u00a0 Former Senator Bob Corker could be of assistance to our staff because of his institutional knowledge and be a great asset to help our senate office staff.\u00c2\u00a0 I will allow my staff to continue to consult with him throughout my tenure, and both he and his staff will be welcome to stop by any tim<\/em>e.<\/p>\n<p>Maine: \u00c2\u00a0I wonder what the future holds for Cynthia Dill, the Democratic candidate who the Democratic Party wasn&#8217;t running with?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2012\/11\/06\/shelley-berkley-election-dean-heller_n_2046809.html\">Nevada<\/a>: \u00c2\u00a0Your classic &#8220;I know you all but what am I&#8221; defense to Ethics charges.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rightwingwatch.org\/content\/todd-akin-compares-criticism-his-remarks-beheadings-islamic-extremists\">Missouri<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0 Todd\u00c2\u00a0Akin: \u00c2\u00a0Beheadings and Nazi Germany. \u00c2\u00a0Oh My!<br \/>\nIn summary of how this race is expected to turn out: \u00c2\u00a0it took two flubs for Akin to sink himself and Claire McCaskill to hold on. \u00c2\u00a0Also this will prove to be a source of acrimony in the coming Republican Party squabbles.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/maddowblog.msnbc.com\/_news\/2012\/11\/05\/14947871-todd-akins-growing-criminal-record\">Bemusing comment<\/a>: \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<em>As for the larger context, if Akin is elected tomorrow, he&#8217;ll have one of the more extensive criminal records of any U.S. senator in history<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.minnpost.com\/glean\/2012\/11\/bills-i-dont-believe-there-such-thing-climate-change\">Minnesota<\/a>. \u00c2\u00a0Kurt Bills doesn&#8217;t believe in Climate Change. \u00c2\u00a0He&#8217;s also teaching our children stuff. \u00c2\u00a0Be afraid. \u00c2\u00a0 Be very afraid.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fox28.com\/story\/19940617\/michigan-house-race-muddled-after-bizarre-start\">Michigan 11<\/a>: Stay classy, Republican Ron Paul acolyte.<br \/>\n<em>\u00c2\u00a0As the race enters its final days, the focus has been more on the candidates&#8217; personal qualities than the issues. Democrats contend Bentivolio is a right-wing extremist and mentally unfit to serve, while Republicans say Taj is a radical leftist with suspicious foreign ties.<br \/>\n<\/em>And&#8230; \u00c2\u00a0we get this.<br \/>\n<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/blogs\/on-congress\/2012\/11\/bro-house-candidate-bentivolio-mentally-unbalanced-147994.html\">Politico.com reported Nov. 1<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0that the brother of Republican candidate Kerry Bentivolio told Michigan Information and Research Service (MIRS), a subscription-based news service, that his brother is &#8220;mentally unbalanced&#8221;.
